Maxime Le Calvé captures so well the modes of operating interdisciplinarity because his ways of practising theory and theorizing practice are deeply intertwined with that of the Cluster. Providing space for such entangled research to flourish was always our vision: training a new generation of scholars to tackle old questions in new ways, across design, humanities and science. Maxime shows the Cluster in motion while reflecting one of its foundational values: curiosity and iterative sketching are the mindset and the heartbeat of our collective endeavours, bridging the analogue and the digital toward the foundation of a new culture of materials.
The arts of noticing are one of the greatest contributions that anthropology can bring to design and to science. Trained in one of the leading ethnology traditions in Europe, Maxime Le Calvé crafts graphic stories on the spot, turning tables on established perspectives thanks to his carefully involved conversations. These stories have the power of rearranging the way we perceive interdisciplinarity, demonstrating its embedded intertwined nature, as a transformative process of ›Gestaltung‹ that goes hand in hand with knowledge making.
Maxime also displays the huge scope of the Cluster activities, their sometime curious yet often provocative accents, and the transient and fleeting nature of the bonds we construct to communicate across disciplinary boundaries. This show confirms the fact that anthropologists who have embraced the »design turn« are perfect partners for scientists and designers to build lasting bridges between worlds.
